Director’s Message

The Bronx Educational Opportunity Center has been serving community residents for the past twenty years. During this time, the Bronx EOC has helped thousands of individuals to better lives through educational advancement, occupational training, and/or the array of support services frequently needed to overcome challenges to personal/family/community improvement.

The Bronx EOC is one of a network of ten educational enterprises throughout New York State. Each serves eligible adults, providing tuition-free services that lead to achievements such as College Entrance, obtaining of a GED, enhanced literacy and/or math skills, and/or career-related preparation, internships and job placement.

Students entering the Bronx EOC should feel comfortable knowing that our staff of instructors, counselors, employment specialists and support staff are well qualified, experienced and committed to student success.

Community leaders and prospective employers are welcome to contact us to visit and learn first-hand about the EOC and how its programs prepare the workforce and community leaders of tomorrow. The Bronx is able to tailor its programs to meet specific needs of a particular employer or industry, and is committed to learning and responding to identified needs.

We are committed to realizing the EOC's potential as a community resource, a partner with other institutions in the bettering of the Bronx, and as a model for community based adult education.

We know that each individual who comes to the Bronx EOC is on a path that does not end when they leave here. Our mission is to equip each student with the skills and self-awareness needed to continue towards a life full of positive achievements.

I hope this website is helpful to you. Like the EOC itself, it should not be the end of your journey of inquiry. Let this be a beginning. Please be in touch to learn more about us.

Dr. Michael Seliger
Interim Executive Director

OUTSTANDING BRONX EOC GRADUATES FY 2006-7
student
Ms. Clarissa Pettis is a 37 year old mother of a 13 year old son and a 14 year old daughter. Clarissa came to the Bronx EOC in July 2006. She felt that providing for her children was not an easy responsibility, especially with little or no marketable job skills. Clarissa therefore entered the Executive Assistant program at the Bronx EOC in September 2006. In her own words, 'the classes were a challenge; I only knew a few microsoft application and operations; needless to say, the staff and the faculty were of great help to me'. Clarissa graduated successfully in December 2006. As she is searching for a good job, she worked part time as Lab Assistant at the Bronx EOC, helping her student colleagues. 'I am back at the school that trained me, I am proud'.
Ms. Evelyn Martinez is a 20 year old single mother with a three month old son. Evelyn was seven months pregnant when she enrolled in the Executive Assistant program at the Bronx EOC in December 2006. 'Executive Assistant program was a tough but a good experience for me', Evelyn recalls later. 'In my health condition, I could not get up in the mornings, I had a rough time to concentrate in the class, my baby was moving around a lot. But with the help of my mom, I made it to the classes regularly. Of course, my counselor and the teachers help to complete my program'. Evelyn successfully completed the program in March 2007. Three weeks later, she had a baby boy. In June 2007, she also opted to work as a part time Lab Assistant at the Bronx EOC.

Smart Teachers, Smart Board, Smart Students

As part of the technology building in all the EOCs, the University Center for the Academic and Workforce Development (UCAWD) has provided the Bronx EOC with Smart Board technology. The Smart Board is an electronic interactive white board in which teachers and students may interact in a learning environment. The smart board can be used to write on, to download curricular materials from the computer or the internet or to make presentations such as power point shows or videos. The Smart Board will be an excellent teaching tool to small group of learners, be they students or staff, because of its interactivity, resourcefulness and ease of use.

Selected staff in the Bronx EOC will use the Smart Board in the Academic Support Center to create student interest, increase class participation and improve progress. The Smart Board also challenges the instructor to be creative and make available materials from the infinite resources of the internet.

Current Technology

In each of the Bronx EOC's occupational programs, state-of-the-art equipment, software and information is utilized to assure that the EOC graduates are ready to meet the expectations of employers, not only with regard to good work habits, but the knowledge needed to perform - and grow - in the 21st Century Work World.
